Women of La Melonada in Yolombó: Pioneers in the cultivation of organic ginger

August 26, 2024

Vamos Tejiendo, a project implemented by Pact and funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, seeks to promote decent working conditions for women in the sugarcane value chain in Colombia. One of the project's activities is the promotion of women's economic autonomy, and for this reason it has partnered with the company Molienda Real, which connects producers of organic panela to international markets. Among the products also offered by Molienda Real is organic ginger, a product with potential since there are no existing organic crops in the area.

Sixteen women have organized themselves to grow ginger, and have received organic inputs, seeds and technical assistance from Molienda Real. They have also received training from Pact in soft and technical skills to boost their enterprises.

It is hoped that this group will be able to boost the organic ginger market in the region while generating income, which translates into greater economic autonomy and a better quality of life for their families. The first harvest is scheduled for December.
